challengeHelp us Understand the Challenges Your Community Faces
The KCPC is looking for your feedback to inform future workshops

On June 28, 2012 the Kane County Planning Cooperative held a kick-off meeting to introduce the recently adopted Kane County 2040 Plan and to explore the challenges facing our stakeholders countywide. From this meeting, and subsequent outreach via this newsletter, the KCPC was able to conclude that 1.) stalled developments, 2.) foreclosures and 3.) economic stagnation were three priority "hot topics" that needed to be addressed. This feedback guided the development of the KCPC Workshops that addressed these issues.

Now, two years later, we want to reach out to you all again to see how much your priorities have changed. This information will be used to develop future KCPC workshops.

Currently, what do you see as the major challenges facing your community? Please click here to rank the "hot topics" you're experiencing in your community.

Kane County Health Department Wins SHIP Video Challenge Contest

Video recaps KCHD efforts to enhance community gardening

Kane County Health Department's video featuring community gardening efforts has been selected by Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) as a winner in its "SHIP Video Challenge" contest. The State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) is the state's plan to address the most pressing health issues facing Illinois residents. To tell the story of how Kane County is addressing obesity: nutrition and physical activity, one of the SHIP's primary health concerns, Health Department staff recorded footage and took pictures of gardens in the county and worked with the Information Technologies Department to submit a polished video for consideration. Kane County's video focused on the many community garden efforts in the county, both public and private, that are helping residents grow their own food and incorporate physical activity while tending their gardens. Gardening is an example of how the department is implementing the Kane County Community Health Improvement Plan's strategy to increase consumption of and access to fresh fruits and vegetables. It also highlights the Fit Kids 2020 Plan and its goal to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity by 2020. Kane County was one of ten organizations in the state to be selected for a $1,500 award and it will use the funding to enhance gardening efforts at the community garden located on Highland Avenue in Aurora. The department offers 90 garden plots for lease and this year 80 are being used by refugee families through a partnership with World Relief.

Preparing for Climate Change:
The Chicago Story
Panel explores potential business and policy responses to our changing climate

The United States government released its latest National Climate Assessment in April of this year. The report affirms that our country, and our entire planet, is warming. The report warns that if our current rate of carbon emissions isn't curbed, climate change in the 21st century will create additional stresses on our residents, our living environments and our quality of life.

In response to these current findings, the Metropolitan Planning Council has assembled a distinguished panel to discuss what actions the business and policy communities can consider to mitigate against and adapt to emerging climate driven realities.

The panelists will be:

Donald Wuebbles
-Professor of Atmospheric Science, University of Illinois

Tom Skilling
-Chief Meteorologist, WGN-TV

Karen Weiger
-Chief Sustainability Officer, City of Chicago

Mary Gade
-President of Gade Environmental Group, LLC.

MarySue Barrett
-President of the Metropolitan Planning Council (moderator)

The discussion will take place on September 17th in Chicago from 6-8PM.
